BARBADOS (CMC) -- Against the background of a revised hurricane forecast and the trend of low-forming systems and unexpected rapid intensification close to the Caribbean island chain, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) is urging member states to be prepared even in the case of "minor" systems.
An updated weather forecast, issued this month, is predicting more intense hurricane activity for the next six weeks, CDERA has said.
"In his revision, Professor William Gray of the Atmospheric Science Department of the Colorado State University is predicting a total of 16 storms, eight hurricanes, and five intense hurricanes," a statement from CDERA said.
Up to September 15, 2004 there were 11 storms, five hurricanes, and four major hurricanes for the 2004 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
Professor Gray also issued forecasts for the individual months of August, September, and October.
For August, he predicted eight storms, four hurricanes, and three major hurricanes. During that month there were seven storm, three hurricanes, and two major hurricanes.
For September he has five storms, three hurricanes and one major hurricane.
So far there have been two storms, one hurricane, and one major hurricane.
For October, he has forecast three storms and one hurricane.
